Plasterboard and Regulations

In recent years the number of regulations around home improvements has increased with specifics on types of plasterboard that either are advised to be used or in some cases must be used to satisfy local and national planning guidelines.

There are different types of plaster board that plasterers may use depending on the work that is being carried out. For instance where there isn't much space to work with then slightly thinner boards may be used as well as smaller boards to enable their transport up a narrow staircase for instance.

Fire board must be used in place of plasterboard in the surrounds of fuel burning stoves within a certain clearance. This is another regulation that must be adhered to for fire safety. Other plasterboard regulations involve the promotion of thermally efficient homes. So a relatively new planning rule that all local authorities are now imposing is that where 50% or more of the old plaster covering external walls has been removed in a house, it must be replaced by thermally insulated board. These changes have had significant impact as thermally insulated plaster board is between 8 to 12 times more expensive than tradition British gypsum or your other standard plasterboard brands.
